NCFE Burlesque Costume Making (Tuesday 2-6pm)

15 week class which you will learn the art of flower making, customising clothing for costume, making pasties, knicker making. A great class for the beginner or more advanced seamstress. Lots of glitz and glamour guaranteed!

Got sewing projects you have not managed to finish? Need a refresher with your skills? Got stuck on a project?

Then this is the class for you. A chance to develop your sewing skills and complete the unfinished projects hiding in your wardrobe!

Pattern Drafting and Making Knickers

Comprehensive 5 day class cover all areas of knicker making for womenswear. Learn to draft patterns and make a collection of your own designs. For more information and to book please click here

Fascinators and Flower making

 

Through this course you will use original pattern instructions from 1920s-1950s to make a variety of vintage ribbon and fabric flowers mounted as fascinators, headbands or as corsages. Struggling with stretch fabrics....? Come and demystify the lycra in your fabric stash. Learn to make your own Tshirts, knickers and have time to work on your own projects in day three.

Dates : Sunday 22nd April, Sunday 29th April and 13th May 10-4pm.

Costs: £80 plus £18 material cost (which covers knicker and t-shirt projects, you will need to bring your own final project materials/patterns).

Got something your stuck with on a project? Need some help with coursework or just can't make it regularly to class?

Alongside 'Make friends with your sewing machine' lessons for those new sewers who need some one on one quality time with your machines, I also offer hour and a half slots for which can be specific to your needs. Classes usually held at my studio.

Fee: £40 (£35 students)

Why Thursdays are My Favourite Day

 

Since finishing my MA last year I have been volunteering at Leicestershire Museums Costume Collection which is a such a wonderful experience. I am working alongisde a great group of volunteers and help care for the collection which supports Snibston Fashion Gallery. I have seen and handled some lovely examples of costume and always come away inspired. This week I accessioned an unfinished jade embroidered1920s kimono complete with ink hand drawings of Chinese motifs. The possible stories that each garment holds, that it belonged to someone, was chosen by someone is what makes me love historical dress. Each garment was once part of someones life. The clothes we wear are so much a part of life and our identity.

I wanted to share with you the video that Sarah has made of the Fashion Gallery so you can see for yourself what am amazing collection is housed here (just so you know it is free entry too on Wednesday between 1pm-3pm).

Women's corset 1900

This collection has the Symington collection, which is the most fantastic collection of corsets, underwear and swimwear dating from 1850s.  Some can be seen on displayat the moment alongside some other gems in their current exhibition 'Support and Seduction' which runs until May 13th 2012.

There are some great talks supporting the exhibition so have a look at whats coming up.
